I run on grass and can feel my forefoot padding the ground. Still, these aren’t my running shoes any more than my road bike is a full-time substitute for my car.

“What are they like?” people ask breathlessly when I wear my vibram five fingers to the coffee shop. “Should I be running barefoot?” I tell them that going back to basics can be complicated. There’s no scientific evidence that running shoes prevent (or cause) injuries — just as there’s no proof that barefoot running does. And minimalist shoes? It’s too soon to tell. But I’ll keep running in different shoes for different reasons (and occasionally go barefoot), all with an open mind. And, I hope, a nearer-to-perfect stride.

“They’ve made a major change in my running altogether,” Blotter said of the two pairs of five fingers he owns. “My gait is different, my stride is different and the muscles involved are different.

“The most important thing for me is the heel strike.five fingers With conventional running shoes I had a terribly massive heel strike. Now my heel strike has all but gone away with five finger shoes.”

Blotter said that the vibram five fingers allow a runner’s feet to adapt more naturally to the shape of the terrain. They also help the body adapt to running on the ball of the foot rather than requiring a heavy heel strike,vibram five fingers.

Erik Bartlett, owner of the Run Around — a new store at 528 S. Main Street that specializes in five finger shoes and gear — said that he’s seen a growing interest in the “” running trend in recent years, though it’s not a new concept.

“People have been running barefoot forever,” he said.

He said the Run Around will begin carrying vibram five fingers in February 2011 — a long wait that’s due to the increased demand for the vibram shoes.

According to Vibram’s website, one of the main goals of the five finger shoes is to “encourage forefoot striking, meaning your forefoot will contact the ground first, then engage muscles in your feet and lower legs as your heel touches down. This style of vibram five fingers is safer, may lead to fewer injuries, and is biomechanically more sound from an energy and force distribution standpoint.”

From working with runners and area coaches, Ward said that the cushioning and high-tech assembly of modern vibram shoes have possibly caused feet to become less trained and less durable than they used to be. Doing some barefoot jogging or post-run striding with five fingers can help strengthen the foot and improve how we run, he said.

In that sense, he said that the vibram shoes or similar products appear to have the theory working for them.

Bartlett said that the vibram shoes — or similar models by Nike or Saucony — may help strengthen a runner’s feet and ankles, and cause less stress on the knees. But in his opinion, they may not be for everyone–vibram five fingers.

Blotter, who averages about 28 miles per week, said that the five finger shoes may eventually help him make the transition to running completely barefoot.

Still, he’s not quite ready to head out on a run with nothing over his feet.

“I’ve run completely barefoot on treadmills, but I haven’t ventured out into man-made hazards without five fingers,” he said. “I’m flirting with the idea, but I just haven’t done it yet.”

With their inflexibility, cushioning, and raised heels, they almost force you to crash down on your heel and send the impact of all your weight in every step straight into your knees and hips.  That’s not how our bodies were designed to work, and it does terrible harm. (This post is part of an ambitious project to crowd-source the January issue of Forbes Magazine. Click here to submit your own ideas for “5 finger shoes.”) Millions of years of evolution gave us a much springier way of running, which begins with our coming down on the front of our foot, a little like when you run in place.  You necessarily run that way when you run barefoot, because hitting with your heel would be unbearably painful.  But who is going to run barefoot in the modern world?

Enter five fingers, a line of shoes by the Italian company Vibram that are really gloves for the feet, with minimal protection and a finger for each toe. They look like the feet part of a gorilla costume, and they feel almost like being barefoot. They have grown a cult of devotees over the past few years, and they’re starting to go mainstream. You see them on more and more runners, and the stores that sell vibram fivefinger shoes can’t keep them in stock. The running shoe industry has begun trying to figure out how to either beat them or join them, and they and other new minimalist shoes are the subject of a long article in the November 2010 issue of Runner’s World.

I’m a believer.  I became one after seeing the wacky-looking things on someone, asking about them, learning more online, and deciding to spend the $85 to try out a pair of five finger shoes (a modelthat covers the top of the foot and“Keeps Stuff Out”).  I feel freer, faster, lighter on my feet, and my knees and hips don’t hurt anywhere near the way they used to. Pronation and plantar fascitis seem to disappear when you start using your feet the way they were designed to be used.

You have to adapt to barefoot or vibram five fingers running very carefully and slowly. Much of the impact that used to shoot into your knees and hips now gets absorbed by your calf muscles. Those muscles will get very sore at first and then very strong.You have to wake up muscles all over your feet that you haven’t been using. You have to toughen the bottoms of your feet.  You can get blisters—I wear five fingers socks to prevent that. But I’m loving running more than in many years. I feel throughout my body that I’m doing something right that I always used to do wrong. If my experience and that of thousands of others is any guide, the five finger shoes phenomenon can only grow and spread. The age of the modern running shoe that began in the 1970s with Phil Knight and Nike could just possibly begin to enter its twilight.

The shoeless stride is gaining momentum, especially now that shoe companies are targeting “barefooters” with five finger shoes designs. But orthopedic doctors weigh in on the pros and cons.

Barefoot running guru Ken Bob Saxton, a marathon runner, has been expounding the virtues of going shoeless for years, and offers a website with advice to the burgeoning community. Running barefoot, supporters claim, maintains the health of the foot’s 26 bones, 33 joints, 20 muscles, tendons, and ligaments and keeps lower legs healthy and exercised. They say it’s safe, as long as you watch your step,but with vibram five fingers, you are totally safe.

Robert Gotlin, director of orthopedic and sports rehabilitation at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City, said it’s about biomechanics. When wearing 5 finger shoes, the runner typically lands on the heel of the foot; barefoot runners land on the front of the foot. This “changes the impact of force on the foot and the lower extremities,” he said in a news release on October 25. “As such, when you land on your forefoot, the force upon the body is reduced significantly.”

Barefoot runners enjoy other benefits as well, he said, such as strengthening the plantar fascia muscles — which run along the sole of the foot. Also barefoot running reduces the chance of shin splits. The tradeoff is that landing on the front of the foot can cause problems with the Achilles tendon. And of course the obvious risk is that you could accidentally step on, well, just about anything—vibram five fingers.

The $17 billion running shoe industry stands a lot to lose from the trend, but many companies are introducing minimalist options that protect the foot while simulating the biomechanics of running barefoot. Five fingers by Vibram claims to stimulate muscles to make feet stronger, and other companies, such as Feelmax and Terra Plana, are following suit with their own designs. Even conventional athletic shoe manufacturer Nike, with its “vibram fivefinger shoes“, caters to this development, marketing its minimal thin-sole as a trainer.

The jury is still out on whether or not minimalistic shoes help or hinder. “We’ve seen a fair amount of injuries from barefoot running already, or from just running in the vibram five fingers,” said Nathan Koch, director of Rehabilitation at Endurance Rehab in Phoenix, Arizona, on Competitor.com.
