For Running Shoes, Fit First and Price Last

SHARON TANENBAUM has been a serious runner for six years. The Brooklyn resident, 30, has completed three marathons and several shorter races. Each week she logs about 20 miles.

“I like running in simple shoes,” she said. “The more you pay, the more unnecessary stuff you get.”

She is right. Money often buys higher-quality goods, but not when it comes to running shoes–vibram five fingers.

Over the last three decades, running has exploded as a leisure sport. In 2009, 476,000 runners completed a marathon. In 1976, the number was just 25,000. Sales of five finger shoes reached a record $2.36 billion in 2009, 60 percent more than a decade earlier.

They should feel comfortable right away. “The shoes should feel like they belong on your feet,” said Gordon Bakoulis, 49, a running coach in New York City who has competed in four United States Olympic Marathon Trials.

If you are planning to run a long race, spend at least two weeks breaking in your new shoes before start day.

LESS IS MORE The cheapest solution? Forgo shoes altogether and join the legions of runners who have embraced the barefoot trend.

It is not just a fad. A few studies have suggested that running barefoot might be better for your body over the, ahem, long run than running in vibram fivefinger shoes. A 2009 study found that compared to going barefoot, running shoes put more pressure on the hip, knee and ankle joints and concluded that running shoes could put athletes at greater risk for osteoarthritis of the knee. However, Ward said that many of the claims made by the five finger shoes manufacturers are similar to the actual benefits of running barefoot.

“Running barefoot on a flat, grassy surface is really great for training,” he said. “So the theory is the same. If you land midfoot, with slightly more flexion in your knee, it distributes the force across the arch of your foot.”

He said that research has shown that excessive heel strikes can send the impact force up through the kinetic chain — from the ankle, to the knee, to the hip. Putting more force through the joints can even slow a runner,but this kind of things will not come to five fingers.

From working with runners and area coaches, Ward said that the cushioning and high-tech assembly of five finger shoes have possibly caused feet to become less trained and less durable than they used to be. Doing some barefoot jogging or post-run striding can help strengthen the foot and improve how we run, he said.

Foot protection needed here

I’ve been kayaking for a few months and have been looking for a neoprene bootie that lets my feet breathe. I’ve tried wearing my Keens and they are way too big, and the neoprene booties I’ve purchased make my feet sweat too much. I would love something that provides protection against the sharp gravel, lets my feet breathe, and will still fit comfortably in my kayak. For example, I do not, for the life of me, understand kitten heels. Those little inch-high, awkward-looking heels confuse the hell out of me. As a girl whose personal motto is ‘go big or go home,’ I don’t understand the point.

I am a firm believer that Crocs are actually a joke, made by some old man who’s laughing his ass off at how stupid people look in vibram fivefinger shoes somewhere. I hate them. Barefoot running isn’t for all

Q. A couple of weeks ago you wrote about running shoes—vibram fivefinger shoes and orthotics, I am reading a lot about barefoot running. What is your take on it?

A. It is an interesting subject, that is for sure.

Personally, I am not one who kicks off her shoes the minute she gets home to walk barefoot the rest of the evening. I am also one who hurts when doing a barefoot run on the beach.

I tried, but for my runs I enjoy running shoes. However, I have also heard of people who started barefoot running and are doing wonderful and love five finger shoes.

I have heard things from people who gave up wearing shoes like, “I used to have shin splints all the time” and “My knees were hurting,” or “I kept pulling muscles.”

My personal opinion is keep doing whatever works for you. If you love it, and it has helped all kind of issues, more power to you. If you love wearing your vibram fivefinger shoes and don’t want to run barefooted, I am right there with you.

If you have no clue what I am talking about, let me explain.

Ken Bob Saxton, a barefoot running pioneer, and Kevin Kirby, a sports podiatrist-biomechanics, took sides on the whole debate. Saxton said it has been the best thing for him, a process of being more interactively involved in running. He met runners who would get hurt all the time until they started barefoot running with vibram five fingers. The Born to Run book has encouraged a lot of runners to try it.

Kirby responded that he had no problem with people running occasionally barefoot on safe surfaces such as grass. But he worries about injuries such as puncture wounds, infections and lacerations of vital parts of the bottom of the feet. So “my take” on it is, do as much research as possible, find out what “foot strike” you have and if you still want to try going barefoot, start slowly and on nice soft grass. Just remember not to get caught up in a “fad” that can be a life changing, wonderful thing for some, and an open door to all kinds of problems and injuries for other.

The rise of barefoot running
